In Italy it’s not unusual for a hostess to buy a dolce (cake or dessert) to serve at the end of a meal rather than make it herself. Pastry shops and bakeries sell an extensive range of traditional tarts, spiced yeast cakes and biscuits to be enjoyed with coffee or a glass of vin santo, dessert wines or a liqueur. On special occasions like Christmas and Easter almost every town has its own specialty for its local saint’s day.
